Happy Holidays!

Is it really the end of the year?! Good thing everyday can be a holiday. That's how I like to think about it. Each day (and all things) given to us is a gift. These thoughts are showcased in my latest release, which was created from reflections on the holidays, nostalgic moments, chasing dreams, and celebrating life. I hope you enjoy the new music and have a blessed and peaceful holiday season.

Reunion - EP Now Available
allMeadow and I (AKA the transatlantic electro-chill duo) are thrilled to be back with a serving of inter-genre mixes. We have created a unique musical bond over the past several years. Reunion is the latest example, which is a downtempo holiday EP intended to be enjoyed year-round. Although starting with a trip back to "Forbidden" lane, this album contains all new melodies and riffs I recorded for allMeadow's mixing sandbox.

Greetings Fans!

I hope this update finds you well, practicing optimism and living your inspirations. If you are like me and need a nudge from time to time, I highly recommend you get a copy of A Philosopher's Notes by Brian Johnson.

To say the least, it has been a challenging 2011 for many people around the world. Here at home for me in the United States, the 10th anniversary of September 11 is upon the country. In light of optimism, let us all continue resilience worldwide and keep moving forward (see my post on Perseverance).

New Album in the Works

Letting Go to Seek

Sitting here a week before the end of 2010, I'm recalling the year and recognizing I have not fully carried out my 2010 creed. I've had a hard time letting go, particularly of things past. From the moments of genius (give thanks, pat yourself on the back and keep going) to the not so genius (forgive yourself) to the out of control (seek help from a higher power), letting go is a must. We must learn (not forget) from the past, really be present for the meaningful moments, and live for the future. We cannot control everything in our lives, be it business, people, or the car we do or don't drive. However, we can choose how to make use of the trials and joys life brings us.

Professionally and personally, 2010 has been one of my most challenging years. A new city, home, colleagues, friends, ideas, and plans with unknown outcomes. A whole new network, but actually an extension of my existing network. These are additional resources on my path in life. That's the key difference in how one can move forward. We can either jump right in and take advantage of what's been made available to us, or approach (and many times avoid) new opportunities with caution. This is where we must let go. Safety is always near, whether you see it or not. Our faith, friends, family, and soul are there to guide and support us.

Be bold. Let go of what holds you back. Fear is a contagious, dark, unproductive, and empty resolution. Holding on to negatives is a disease of self destruction. Seek wisdom and opportunity. Infect your network with hope. Think how your actions and decisions affect others, not just yourself. Reciprocate the lessons and positive support you receive and use it to fuel your passions in life.

For seeking a solution to challenges, mishaps, and disbelief there is a reward ... knowing you did not give in to an excuse, cynicism, or deceit.

My Social Hiatus

I felt it appropriate to post an update, as my fans deserve to know I'm still around. :)

If it hasn't been apparent, I have been on intentional hiatus for some time from regular blogging as well as status updates via Twitter and Facebook.

Why? I became a father almost four years ago (of the precious girls in the photo!). At that place in time I knew my life had changed forever. Everything would be different. Sacrifices needed to be made. Priorities changed. However, the music did not (nor has since) stopped.

As a parent I've been creatively inspired more than ever. I've been wanting to make my business grow and at the same time keep balance with my family and career passions. It was all a matter of time... I've just begun a partnership with a great manager (Matt Bucher) and agent here in Chicago. We've had numerous discussions and feel a great synergy on how we can work together. This will be an ever-evolving relationship. We trust there are many great developments and experiences to be had around my music as well as other artists we plan to work with.

There will be more social updates to come. Some quite regular, and I'm sure some short hiatuses as well. ;)

Be well and THANK YOU for being on the journey with me. All my fans are truly appreciated and a core inspiration for me to keep moving forward musically!

Best Music for the Road

Yah yah, I know, long time no blog post. What's with the lame and staggered communication (I ask myself)?! :| I'm working on a plan to change this bad habit. Regardless, amongst many things keeping me busy lately, I've been driving quite a bit. So, I thought it appropriate to address the specific music that helps me stay alert on the road.

Trance/Techno/House - Whether you love it or hate it, you won't fall asleep (OK ... not guaranteed, but a safe bet).

Instrumental - That is, elect ronica, instrumental rock, or whatever doesn't make you nod off. Also great for making up your own words and/or getting nostalgic. ;)

80s - Can't go wrong with pop synth as well as music gods such as U2, The Police, and INXS.

Early 90s Arrivals - Blues Traveler, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden always keep me jammin'.

To close, there is always the latest and great music from my fave non-evil music site, Magnatune.com. Lots of great electronica and rock.

BTW - I'll admit there are a couple (overplayed) songs rotating on my iPod. My 3 1/2 yr old's favorite "I Gotta Feeling" from the Black Eyed Peas and "Lovers in Japan" from Coldplay (which I'm actually performing at a wedding this weekend).

István Takács, a representative of the HCLU (Hungarian Civil Liberties Union - a human rights watchdog NGO), recently contacted me as he needed music for a documentary on the life of Roma people in the east side of his country.

Some background:

"During the aftermath of murders in Tatárszentgyörgy, Péter Juhász and Bence Békés began visiting villages around Ózd to support the Romani people living in the area. With advocacy tools provided by the HCLU, they joined in helping these communities advocate for themselves and fight discrimination more effectively. We have documented their work, this film is the first piece in documenting their work and revealing what they found."

Support from Afar

As I sit in my chair with my coffee and air conditioning, I'm feeling quite spoiled and likely a bit too comfortable. The disaster in Haiti keeps coming to mind as I attempt to get my day-to-day projects completed.

I must remain where I am at this time, but this chair doesn't have to stop me from helping those in need. Large scale events such as this earthquake are always a solid reminder that there are continuously people in need worldwide, be it on a small, medium or large scale. We can provide support and help people wherever our location.

No matter how busy we are today or the priorities we must regularly attend to, there is always time for one or more of the following:

Pray - A positive thought, a minute of meditation, a shout out to God. Whatever the flavor, we all have at least a moment to send some positive energy where it is needed.

Give if you can - For example, eBay's Giving Works program is a great way to buy, sell or directly donate to more than 40 organizations working to support the Haiti disaster.

Crossroads

To say the least, 2009 has been a crazy and tough year for everyone. Watching and reading stories from across the nation last Thanksgiving week was a strong reminder of the economy's impact, creating a crossroads for many people. It's so easy to be fearful and negative and then swim in it. However, the exact opposite was displayed in many of the stories.

To follow the example from the many stories of people facing adversity, now is a time of opportunity. A time to expose hidden talents, dreams and goals. A time for change. As I thought about myself and others contemplating a resolution, the following thoughts came to me ... A soul with courage negates fear. Nothing can make you yield but yourself. Let your soul be your compass. As Plato once so eloquently put it, "Nothing in the affairs of men is worthy of great anxiety."

We also can't forget to let loose at times. I see it as a requirement in life. Get the negative out and revive. We all have a freak flag. Don't be shy to let it fly once in awhile. Let go. You won't regret it. :)

To Tell a Story

Q. Must a story be written in prose, meter or rhyme, when so much narrative seeks to be unveiled from strings?

A. Of course not, but I do find many people are prone to think certain instruments as background or solely meant for accompaniment. I encourage these thinkers to discover how much emotion pureness can deliver. Often times as well, it's other instruments and voices that accompany a string, brass, woodwind or percussion instrument. If you're a skeptic, close your eyes and really listen next time you hear an instrumental song.

A little Strings 101 ...

There are three groups of string instruments:

Harps - the strings are contained within a frame
Lutes - the strings are supported by a neck and a bout ("gourd")
Zithers - the strings are mounted on a body

There are also three playing styles:

Plucked - like a guitar or harp
Bowed - like a violin or cello
Struck - like the piano or hammered dulcimer

I'm writing this post in hope to help more stories be told; however, strings are not the only method to tell a meaningful story. Everyone has their own voice, be it in the form of a musical instrument, hand, or spoken exclamation.

In college I took soprano saxophone lessons as well a voice class. I was actually a member of the university choir for two years to add to my 4 years of high school choir. I've also written my fair share of poetry. However, the piano, since my discovery at the age of 5, is the outlet that I can best tell a story.

Who knows, I may actually record while I'm singing along sometime. Only tomorrow will tell. Heck, I just released an electronica album ... but the accompaniment is not the piano. ;)

Switch On: Official Release and Story Behind the Album

The new remix album, Switch On, from allMeadow and me is finally complete! By complete, I mean tracks mastered and in the process of being distributed to digital music networks such as iTunes, Magnatune, and Amazon. The official release to all networks should be between early and mid October. However, for those who want it now, the album is currently available on thesixtyone.com (you'll need a user account to download).

Switch On is the result of a collaboration with allMeadow, an artist based in Bristol (United Kingdom). He mixed the tracks, incorporated a ton of creative elements, and performed all the bass guitar parts. What else would you expect from a person located in the drum and bass capital of the world?! Strangely enough, allMeadow and I have never met in person. However, a web cam, mic and today's other great technology enabled us to produce a professional full-length album. Oceans cannot stop our creative spirits. We're kind of star-crossed musicians. :) We met online back in 2005 via mutual creative interests. We're both very proud of this effort and hope it is enjoyed by music lovers around the world. Kudos to allMeadow and his genius mixing mind!

Songs from all my contemporary piano albums were used to create the remixes. 7 of the 10 tracks are brand new. We included and remastered 3 tracks from my 2006 remix EP, Return. We felt they had to be added to the album flow as they fit so well with the concept. The very first track, "Air Cooled," is from a previously unreleased song I composed the parts for almost a decade ago. I'm quite happy to have it complete.

The music is intentionally quite different from my solo contemporary piano work (please note, I do plan to release more solo work). The album is filled with various tempos and instrumentation. The goal was to create a unique product than could serve many purposes, be it experimentation, entertainment, inspiration, or otherwise. The motive of the album is to stimulate and help drive a general sense of productivity. Hence, why the album is named Switch On.

I recently had a long recollection of a specific period of my life back in college. I believe it's because I am in a very different mindset today and was reflecting how I got here. This was a time before I met my wife. I was still growing up (as always) and dealing with the ups and downs of dating, studying, and figuring out my place in the world. If I could go back I would not change the people I met or the challenges I faced, but I would have changed my attitude. For quite some time I struggled with a lack of confidence, mental strength, and patience. This happens when you let negativity get the best of you. Whether it's something of the past, present or just a pest, be better and bigger than it. Don't let it overtake you. Don't take its attitude. Look forward and make use of the positive around you. Change your attitude. Until you do, things will not improve and you will not grow.

Forever an Infant

Each new day, project and innovation begins with infancy. Thought, care and nourishment are key ingredients to successfully moving to the next step of accomplishment. Accomplishment is starting something; knowing that if you finish or not, at least you began. Not everything gets finished and most great things are a work in progress; most often ourselves. Putting in the work and time is what counts. It's part of life education, always living and learning. I desire to forever be an everlearning infant. Regardless, it's what I am whether I chose to accept it or not.

EQ is not QC

The equalizer options on most mp3 et al players these days don't necessarily mean best quality control and sound. Audio and mastering engineers are around for a reason and well-produced music is "ready to go" once on your portable music player, computer, or CD player.

I've received a few pieces of interesting feedback regarding distortion on my albums. I can assure you that there is no distortion on the master recordings. I discussed this with my engineer (Dusk Bennett) to shed some light for fans (and pondering fans) and here is the result...

From Dusk: "A lot of consumer grade playback devices (unfortunately) cannot handle samples that approach the theoretical limit of digital audio (0dBfs - that's decibels full scale) and will start to clip the samples with a resultant digital distortion that's not pretty. Buying a good CD player now is not a POS purchase. It takes some research and an understanding of the DAC's (device for converting a digital code to an analog signal) they implement in them.

One thing I have noticed with iTunes and other software playback driven systems is that the equalizer features do not work right. If you are listening to hot program material with ANY EQ engaged it can distort the audio. Essentially these programs do not account for full scale material (by appropriately reducing the program level a few dB to compensate for the EQ curves) so the curves force the audio device into distortion. I would suggest making sure you do not have this feature engaged when you use your playback software. I stopped using the EQ feature on my iPod the minute I turned it on because I realized what was happening.

As you could imagine it's a really frustrating time to be a mix engineer now. There are no QC standards implemented across the board, the FCC has thrown up their hands with controlling digital audio levels, and the consumers expect all of our hard work to get piped down to a low res mp3 file destined to be played back on a $100 playback system. I suppose until the consumers get fed up with it the status quo will continue (you go Dusk!).

Tip: I believe if you turn the master volume down (about 1/2 to 3/4) on the iPod (or iTunes) this gets around the EQ curve issue. It appears the EQ algorithm is a "post fader" EQ which is a really odd implementation to be honest. Of course the trade off is less volume. In that instance you would need a preamp to recover the signal loss. Since most preamps (stereos) have EQ's anyways, this pretty much renders the EQ feature as useless IMHO."

Buy albums you know are well produced and don't use the EQ when listening to these albums on certain devices. It works. Test it out. Try it with my albums. :) In the end it's up to you on the sound you want, but distortion should be held responsible by the FCC and makers of the electronic devices you buy.

My Dad, the IndyCar Racer?

My dad is living proof that it's never too late to try anything. Earlier this week we headed out to the the Indianapolis Speedway and my dad hitched a ride with Arie Luyendyk Jr. for 3 laps around the track at 180 mph. WOW. I could barely keep up when filming. :) It was a great experience for him and example for me.

I love this quote from Lincoln. Each day is a new beginning. A fresh start to do something new, experience, and make progress.

On an unrelated note (however, a couple of the songs would couple well with IndyCar racing), allMeadow and I are nearing completion of our remix album. It's going to have a really diverse mix of melodies and tempos. Stay tuned...

Bringing Home Baby ... #2

I'm beyond thrilled to introduce Eleanor (Ellie) Carol Costlow. Eleanor arrived on May 8. Big sister (Madeline) is SO excited and proud. She has been helping out so much as each day has become busier.

The second time around was a bit easier for my wife and I to digest. No worries on how to change a diaper, what to do when she cries, or confusion with the umbilical cord. Nerves were much calmer, the mood light, and just thinking about the absolute miracle of childbirth. We even caught a couple movies at the hospital.

We are enjoying each day and look forward to continually nurturing and sharing in many adventures with our children. I can certainly say so many melodies are running through my mind these days. I'll have my daughters critique the tunes before releasing my next album. :)

A simple but powerful statement. In line with Lincoln's thoughts, I'm concerned on how I influence my family and how they will influence others. A daily challenge of putting other people first, being a good example and making positive choices. I'm so thankful for my children. Parenthood has greatly amplified my personal mission and goals. Parent or not, children should be a great inspiration to all adults. As it has been said many times before, children are our future here on Earth.

During my workout today, I had a bit of a revelation. I questioned myself if I'm really "switched on." That is, do I let trivial things get me down? Do I focus too often on what can't be changed instead of what can?

I believe these a pretty common negatives with people. Personally, I need to make sure I'm always switched on to see what I should be focusing on and help eliminate darkness in my life.

Lasting Inspiration

Below is a photo of my physical music collection and old college stereo. I was staring and reminiscing about them the other night. These tunes (aside from the few random children albums for my daughter) have been the biggest inspiration to me. Most of my influences are from 80s and 90s artists. I must also state when very young I quite enjoyed my older brother's vinyls and 8-tracks for Chuck Mangione, Journey, Doobie Brothers, and Christopher Cross (can't forget"Sailing"). :)

New Remix Album Coming Soon

I'm pleased to announce that I'll be working again with allMeadow on a new album. This will be a full-length downtempo/electronica remix album. We will be using samples from my current work and new riffs we both create.

allMeadow is based in the UK and we'll be collaborating via the Web and video. Gotta love the Internet. Given, I will definitely make it over to the UK in the future. However, I have my second child on the way and many other projects on my plate. So, doing what I can to get some more music out there.

We plan to have the album ready for release by summer. It will be available in both digital and physical format.

This project also supports the new genre labeling of my music. With the release of Reconstruction, my music is now referred to as "Contemporary Piano." New Age is not the best genre to describe the music, so I changed things up. Many services that sell my music will soon be labeling all albums with a new genre that best fit the style. There will still be a few services that will use New Age as the genre. Just think of it as "general/contemporary" New Age. :)

I’ve read so many more of these lists on Facebook, I decided to make one more. I needed to get in a second exercise before I do it again in 10 or 20 years. It's been therapeutic.

1. I’ve lived in Indianapolis, Los Angeles and San Diego (and one summer in Maine as well as Chicago). I also regularly spend time in Wisconsin with family.
2. I highlighted my hair once when I lived in L.A. The one and only time that will ever happen.
3. As a kid I inherited giant tinker toys from my brothers. I used to turn them into instruments and microphone stands and lip synch/air jam to tunes on the radio.
4. During college I worked as a pot washer and then a waiter at a sorority. One of the best jobs ever. Great food (every meal) and it’s where I met my wife.
5. I have a Masters in Kinesiology. I focused on Sports Marketing and Management. To get a bit more out of it, I received special permission to take several classes in the business school and elsewhere.
6. I became friends with one of my very best friends in graduate school. The ironic thing is we worked together at the sorority when I was an undergrad. Things change when you attempt to really get to know somebody.
7. I’ve worked for 4 dot-coms. All still up and successful (phew!). It’s been a roller coaster ride.
8. Grad school is what led me to working on the Web. AOL was just getting very popular and I had my first laptop. The Web in turn allowed me to create a business I could manage on the side for my music and have some balance.
9. In college I earned money in the summers mostly by washing windows (homes), working retail (Gap, Gap Kids), being a counselor at a sports and performing arts camp (Maine), and being a lifeguard. Many days I’d work 2 jobs.
10. I recorded my first piano album the spring of 1998. It was demo album called “Broad Uncertainty.” I’ve since improved upon, renamed and rerecorded many of the songs.
11. My favorite quote is from Eleanor Roosevelt - “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
12. My favorite Atari games were Berserk and Frogger. I remember spending $50 of my own money to buy Berserk! My favorite arcade game was Karate Champ.
13. When not on Atari, I played outside all the time as kid. Usually until dusk. I remember falling from a tree one day and catching my underarm on the last limb. Yikes.
14. My movie star crush is Ashley Judd. My wife’s is Clive Owen.
15. I try my best not to judge others. We learn from both success and mistakes. If you’re passionate about something, go for it. If your gut isn’t in it, take a different path.
16. My nickname with friends in high school was Norm. Others called me Robbie. (Mitzi, if you’re reading this, you know this well).
17. My wife and I keep a map and put pins in all the places we’ve traveled to. Makes for some good memories when we take a look at it. And, encourages us to go make more.
18. I drink a Naked juice (so good for you) just about every morning when I wake up.
19. I wrecked my first car when I was 16. It was the day after I got my license and I was picking up a date. I hit a fire hydrant on my driver’s side door when entering the driveway. Explaining more is still too embarrassing.
20. With the exception of Twizzlers, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. I love breads and cheese.
21. I’ve had six surgeries. Two knee, and one for carpal tunnel syndrome, hernia, sinus and a tonsillectomy.
22. I’ve worked from home the past 6+ years. I hope to keep it this way. I know it wouldn’t work for everyone, but it works for me. I get so much more done each day and I get to spend more time with my family.
23. Being a dad is an amazing, unexplainable joy. I’ve grown immensely (I think). :)
24. I’ve been punched in the face one time. I believe I was 10. It hurt…bad. Not a good way to resolve a dispute.
25. In college, one of my elementary school crushes (who really made it clear she didn’t like me at the time), tried to pick me up. About 13 years too late, I was already taken. :)

25 Things

Last night I was challenged by a Facebook contact of mine to share 25 things people may not know about me. I accepted. Thought I’d share on my blog as well. Part of the rules were to post a note with my “25″ and tag 10 people to do the same.

I encourage anyone reading this blog post to do this, whether personally or to share with others. This was a really great exercise for me. Some of this info I haven’t thought about in ages. It was great to reflect, inspire myself and hopefully others.

1. I only remember two things from when I was under the age of 5. One, standing in my crib one night. The second, laying on a hospital table being pinned down. I couldn’t pee and I had to be fixed. Oh, the pain! :)
2. When she was told she only had six months, my mom overcame ovarian cancer for 4 1/2 years. As a child, the extra time with her greatly contributed to and changed my life.
3. I ran track in high school (skipped my junior year) - 300M Hurdles (and a lame attempt at long jump). I wasn’t superb, but I did grow and have fun.
4. I went to a private school for grades 5-12. No jeans, collared shirts, discipline.
5. I tried out for Sister Act 2. I passed the music audition. I stunk at acting at the time, oh well. Why didn’t they just let me play piano and keep my mouth shut!? :)
6. My family only has one car and Honda is our choice (to conserve and save on gas).
7. I love to take photos. I want to keep improving my photography.
8. I started off college majoring in music. I felt it was sucking the creativity out of me, so I changed majors. Hence, my first album Sophomore Jinx.
9. I dislike conflict and enjoy seeing other people happy…both professionally and personally.
10. I want to start yoga, but been too self conscious (I’m not very flexible). I’m determined to get over it.
11. I tell everyone I get the chance to follow their passion. Everyone has a talent, whatever “it” may be. Use it.
12. My immediate family is somehow mesmerized by giving cards to each other on birthdays. We all pass them around to read each occasion.
13. I absolutely despise when people tail me. You’ll know it’s me when you see my classic thumbs up and smirk (versus the alternative) when they pass me.
14. I have 10 beautiful nieces and nephews (and one on the way) that range in age from a few months old to 27. Yah, the older ones are like siblings.
15. I played Little League Baseball for 7 years (ages 5-12). I was pretty good. I often wonder what would have happened if I stuck with it. I don’t want the feeling again, which is why I do my best to go with my gut.
16. I never went to prom. My school didn’t have dances at the time. I was asked by a girl from another school and turned her down (not due to her, but I was too timid). Ironically, I love to dance now and made up for it in college and beyond.
17. My wife and I got engaged in Rome.
18. I love pretty much anything on the History Channel, Food Network or TLC. However, time spent is moderated. :)
19. If I could have joined The Police for one day as the fourth member on keys, I would have done anything to get there.
20. In high school I was obsessed with JCrew. One reason, because I didn’t get to wear their clothes due to being the youngest and having hand-me-downs. Another, my mom dressed me preppy when I was very young. Due to that, the clothes always seemed to best capture who I was… my “look.” I buy more than half my clothes there today.
21. When I start something I have to finish it. My paternal grandfather used to tell me that all the time. I think he enjoyed some of my longer projects. I used to woodwork with him as a kid.
22. My family comes first. That’s the only thing that will stop me from what I started. :)
23. My maternal grandfather was a painter (of houses), but he sang and played harmonica very well. Think that’s where much of my influence sprung when I was young.
24. Two of my brothers are step brothers. They’ve been in my family since I was 12, so they’re blood now. All five of my brothers are different, but they all make me laugh (and poke fun at me).
25. Spiders freak me out.

Acoustic Pianos Only

With the fresh start to a new year, I want to help clear up a misunderstanding I've seen a few comments on around the Web. Some people think I recorded Woods of Chaos (my 2nd album) on an electric piano. Negative, didn't do it and not going to do it, would not be prudent. :) I record all my contemporary piano albums using an acoustic piano. It's truly the only way I can get the dynamics right (I even held a few strings for "Tulip Trees"). The piano in the photo at the top of this blog was actually used for Woods of Chaos. Below is a segment from the album notes many listeners may not have read.

"I recorded Woods of Chaos in HD at 192kHz - 24 bit. The songs are meant to be loud and more in your face."

Hence the bit of an electronic sound in parts. It really was/is an experimental and venting album for me. Technology keeps getting better. Speaking of technology, click here to check out the story behind the mic for Reconstruction.

People Are the Music

I played for a private party this past weekend on a nicely tuned and well-kept Yamaha grand. It's always interesting to get the feel of a new piano (that is, new to me). Anyway, about the party... I really like playing in intimate settings where I can spend more time talking to people. I enjoy hearing what other people do as well as the various types of music they like and how it affects their lives in different ways.

There was a gentleman who pulled up a chair right next to me for a couple songs and just watched me play. Now, that's literally getting into the ambiance. And that's something that really struck a chord with me (no pun intended). People are the music. As I've stated many times in past and present, I want people to create their own experience with the songs. It's not just about me or simply providing a melody and entertaining people. Be it my family, friends or fans, they are the music. They are what keep me inspired to create and do my best to set a mood or share some stories through those 88 keys.

Indiana, Stop Tailing Me!

I recently drove up to Chicago to meet up with some of my family. This is a frequent drive for me. I was alone on this particular drive. Therefore I was a bit more aware of one of my biggest pet peeves, which I'm consistently harassed with every time I drive on 65 in Indiana.

It occurs in packs of cars, in both lanes, and to people who are already speeding. No surprise there are so many accidents.

I've also found the same problem here in Indianapolis. I had to write this post so I could tactfully denote my frustration. Maybe something got into our crops. :) My friends and family from other states make the same claim. I don't get what the rush is. You'll find some of the people thinking they own the road (all of us who pay taxes own it!) are in no state of emergency. You'll end up seeing them at one of your stops or final destination.

So Hoosiers, please stop tailing other drivers. It's not friendly or safe. Isn't the rule one car per 10mph? Maybe some melodic piano pieces will calm you down. ;)

You Can Do It

When I found out the recent news my second child was on the way this popular cheer (at least back when I was in high school) went off in my head. It was either that or the "You can do it!" catch-phrase made popular by Rob Schneider. :)

There will now be 2:

minds to educate
sleeping patterns
mouths to feed and eating rituals
bodies to clean and clothe
car seats to strap in the kids

And the list could go on and on. It's not a list of worries, but just the opposite. It's a motivator stressing me to get up each day, stay healthy, be responsible, and be an example. I'll now have twice the joy and experiences of helping to raise another little miracle. Of course I'll lose some sleep and have more responsibility. It's going to be a great adventure and having more to do makes life more meaningful and interesting. Just look at Jon and Kate Plus 8. Talk about major responsibility. I'll do my best. I can do it, I can, I can.

Now, is it going to be a boy or girl? My wife has been quite sick during this pregnancy. More so than with Madeline. It's been rough, but we're almost out of the sick phase. The baby's heart rate is high and the Chinese birth chart says it's a girl. We'll see, but both the doctor and I think it's another girl.

A 296 Year Old Violin

My wife and I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Joshua Bell perform last Saturday night with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (at the Hilbert Circle Theatre). He performed Concerto No. 3 in B Minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 61, by Camille Saint-Saëns. My understated single word review = Wow (and that's not just because he's a fellow Indiana University graduate). To get a small taste, Joshua received a standing ovation and was drawn out from backstage 3 times to take another bow.

He plays a 1713 Gibson ex Huberman Stradivarius. Amazing story behind it, which can be read here.

Little know fact... I wrote Joshua back in late 2004 in an effort to get him to appear on Woods of Chaos. I was thinking "Friend" or "Not Alone" could use a good dose of solid violin. Not to my surprise he was already booked solid for 3 years. At least I heard back. :)

What's Missing in B-town?

Melissa, Maddie and I went to Bloomington today to pay a visit to our alma mater, Indiana University. First, it had been awhile since we were in B-town. I was very saddened to find out one of my favorite spots to frequent back in college is nothing but memories (frown, sniff, tear). Farewell Macri's, farewell. ;) However, it is a downer of a story.

Aside from filling my stomach I also had some real business to attend to. I was completing the transcription process for "Not Alone" with one of the school of music masters students (btw - sheet music should be up and ready on my site next week). If you haven't spoken to anyone in the music industry about sight reading and transcription, it's an interesting subject. Many musicians don't transcribe their own music. Many of the composers or transcribers can't sight read well or perform on the instruments for which they write the parts... and many musicians don't even read music (that is, non music students who become musicians). It's an anomaly.

Album update: Reconstruction is going to mastering next weekend. Finally! The new album will likely first be available on Magnatune.com in mid August or so. Other digital networks, etc. late August and September.

Ahh... there it is

I'm finally starting to see and sprint towards the finish line. All the equipment issues and delays are remedied and the album is just about ready to go to mastering. It should/will/better be complete within the next 2 weeks and sent off to labels for distribution.

For all those fans I've promised more sheet music, your requests are getting answered. I'm getting a few more songs transcribed to sheet music, starting with "Not Alone." I will make a post when the songs become available. "Not Alone" should be ready before the end of July. "Meant to Be" and "Woods of Chaos" are likely next.

Isn't that great!? It's been a long time since I've read it. Just in time, as I was about to rename my new album to Woods of Chaos 2.

There are continued delays due to equipment issues. Pro Tools why are you failing us!!?? Good thing we have backed up data. So, as soon as we get past this additional glitch and mastering we'll have an album. Looking at probably a late July release now. The ironic thing is this album had to have very little editing. Maybe the extra day in the studio payed off or I'm getting better as I age. :) Hopefully the latter as my hands are starting to ache.

Technology is both a blessing and a curse. An Apple (wink wink) a day may not keep the doctor away.

BTW - I finally saw Prince Caspian (see my previous post on the topic). It is well done with great music by Harry Gregson-Williams. Perhaps that put the curse on the album. The equipment failure occurred when I was watching the movie on Father's Day. I had a message waiting from my engineer when I returned home. Hmm... I still believe we were meant to use that mic.

Looking for the finish line

I just received and listened to half of the rough edits for the new album over the weekend. I'm liking what I hear, but it's always odd to listen to myself.

The album is running a couple weeks behind due to some equipment issues. Long story, but better late than never, right!? So, the album should be complete and hopefully available by late June/early July.

The story behind the mic

My co-producer (and engineer) and I went into the studio thinking we were going to be using the Neumann KM254 mics used on Sophomore Jinx. We loved the sound and it seemed to fit well with the theme of the new album (Reconstruction). However, we had a nice little surprise from London that arrived just in time. A Royer stereo ribbon mic that was used to record piano and strings for the music in the upcoming film Prince Caspian (part of The Chronicles of Narnia). It was sweet and truly delivered the piano with the sound we were looking for. A bit ironic too since The Chronicles of Narnia were my favorite books in childhood. Like it was meant to be.

The album is currently being mixed and mastered. It should be available in digital download by mid June on my site (physical CDs late June). It will hit iTunes, Amazon and other online stores within the next 1-2 months.

New album is cut

Quick update....

I had great sessions in Los Angeles. Didn't get a chance to post any live updates. The sessions were longer and busier than I expected. The good news is the album is cut and we added a couple surprises (intro and a bonus track). I didn't re-record "Oceans" as I previously mentioned to some fans. Maybe in the future. Just didn't feel right once I got into the studio.

Almost showtime

Seems I'm blogging less and less. The trend is obvious in my archive from January '07 (becoming a parent) to today. :) I hope to post a bit more in the future.

I've been making some final tweaks to my new songs. I'm recording in six days and a little nervous and excited as usual.

Here is some more insight to the album. The theme of the album is about reconstructing myself and my experiences in this world. Moving forward is always a struggle. You just have to do your best to put bad experiences behind you and cherish good experiences (and apply them ongoing).

Themes on the album range from my awesome little girl, trips, falling in love, and not being heard or respected (not going to go into details, just something that happens to us all at one time or another).

Can't wait to get in the studio. I'll try to upload some pics and updates each day from the recording sessions.

3 Weeks

I'm 3 weeks away from recording my next album in the city of angels and just finished pre-production tracks for my producer. Yes, I'm late but have a great excuse. I play acoustic piano! I had a crazy time getting all my new audio recording equipment to work in line with my new studio piano. I fully understand why they give out degrees for this now. :) I'm good with computers, but this became another story. This project literally spanned over 6 weekends to get things right and ultimately became a family endeavor. Thanks to my father-in-law's assistance last weekend all is well (he's very good with electronics).

I'm looking forward to completing the project. In the meantime I'm still working on fishing up a few of the songs.

BTW - I'll be in the same studio where Sophomore Jinx was recorded (same piano as well). The album will have a calmer theme and tone in comparison to Woods of Chaos.

Rain, rain, don't go away

It's been raining around my part of the country the last couple days. The warm air is also starting to try and push through. Bummer right!? Only if I want it to be.

I've found some of my best ideas, time spent with family, and simple down time have been on rainy days. They provide a lot more than just an opportunity to slack off, play video games or watch TV.

Get creative.

Recording date set

I finally have a date set to record my new album in May. Taking the whole family to Los Angeles. Should be a great trip. My plan is to have the album cut, mastered and released by late June. Depends on how fast my labels can get the album up online and the CD duplicators can turnaround.

I can't emphasize how thrilled I am to finish this project. There is so much meaning and emotion surrounding it. A lot has occurred in my life since my last album, especially within the last 2 years. With this album comes other major news with things I've been working on. I'll announce this along with the title of my album on a later date.

First Steps

Madeline took her first steps this afternoon. I'm at home working today and went to grab lunch. All of a sudden Madeline stood up, looked at me, and took 5 unassisted steps towards a chair. Amazing. I'm so excited. However, I'm doomed now, right!? Soon she'll be out on the sports field and terrorizing the neighborhood. :)

Been working on a couple new songs to finish my upcoming new album. This is certainly food for inspiration.

My little fashionista

I almost forgot to mention my album fashion coordinator, Madeline. She has been avidly studying all the top fashion magazines to figure out what I should wear for my album cover (however, I'm thinking about using her on it). As long as it’s not just a bib and sunglasses, I’m looking forward to what she puts together for me. However, I’m a little timid as she’s currently only been browsing women’s clothing. Hmm…

Album Update: working underground

This is what happens when you become a parent. Since my free time is at night after my daughter has gone to sleep, I cannot bang away at an acoustic piano. So, I'm setting up shop in my basement as I prefer to work from home (yes, wires running everywhere). I need a place I can spend more time. I have my trusty Korg X3 and Yamaha P85. I need to do some rearranging, a proper chair, and probably some posters for scenery. :) However, this will suffice. I actually quite like it.

I plan to record (on an acoustic piano) late spring out in Los Angeles. I blame my producer who reserved dates with other artists prior to May (Dusk, why do you torture me!?). :) All the more time to get my new songs right. I'm actually re-recording one of my songs (TBA later) in its full version and slowing it up a bit. Until then...off to the basement.

Indiana Jones is back

I've been waiting for this a long time. I'm a huge Indy fan. Like many people, I heard rumors for years. Spielberg, Lucas, Ford, and Williams are back together. The trailer for the 4th film was recently released. Watch it here. Looking forward to a fun movie experience on May 22.

This is a great way to look at music in an attempt to understand many artists. Personally, I'm not out to sound or be like any other musician. I'm simply telling a story (not always my own) by expressing emotion. Listeners can take it or leave it. I'd rather be unlikely than a dime a dozen. :)

The BIG 1

Madeline turned one year old today (that's her on the right sporting her Hoosier pride). WOW! It feels like only a few days have gone by. To say the least it's been an unbelievable year. Maddie's been the main inspiration for my next album, which is taking longer than anticipated. I decided I had to at least experience a full year (all 4 seasons) with my little girl before having the right concepts and emotions in the songs.

And speaking of years, the new year is now upon us. Maddie will be walking, clearly speaking all types of words and phrases, learning how to use the potty (well, that's the hope), and much more. Life gets busy, exciting, rewarding, and entertaining all at the same time. By the way, I swear Maddie's nose is turning orange. She's a vitamin A fanatic.

Personally, this past year was quite a life changing, eye opening adventure for myself. Many growths, rebirths, adjustments, you name it. Time to move forward.

To 2008... Cheers!
